Steel Grating Standards: Chinese vs International Specs for Global Buyers
If you import steel grating from China or anywhere else, the standard written on your inquiry decides everything — load capacity, dimensions, inspection, and whether the panels will pass acceptance on site. The problem is that there is no single “international” steel grating standard. Chinese factories produce to YB/T 4001.1, North American projects specify ANSI/NAAMM, the UK and Commonwealth use BS 4592, and Germany references DIN 24537. They share the same engineering principles, but they are not interchangeable documents. This guide explains what each standard covers, how to read their designation codes, and how to write a specification that works across borders.

The Chinese Standard: YB/T 4001.1
YB/T 4001.1 is the main Chinese standard for steel grating. The current edition, YB/T 4001.1-2019, took effect on January 1, 2020 and fully replaced the 2007 edition. It covers terminology, product structure, models and markings, dimensional tolerances, technical requirements, use design (load tables and span calculations), test methods, inspection rules, ordering information, weight calculation, packaging and quality certificates.
The YB/T 4001 series also includes separate parts for grating platform guardrails and grating stair treads — so a complete project specification may need more than Part 1 alone.
How to Read the Chinese Designation Code
The YB/T designation packs the whole product into one code. Take G325/30/100:
- G — steel grating
- 325 — bearing bar size: 32 mm wide × 5 mm thick
- 30 — bearing bar pitch: 30 mm center-to-center
- 100 — cross bar pitch: 100 mm center-to-center
Optional letters after the numbers add structure type, bar profile and surface treatment — for example S means serrated (anti-slip) bearing bars, as in G255/30/100S. Read a Chinese quotation this way and you can immediately compare it with your drawing, without relying on the factory’s word.
North America: ANSI/NAAMM Metal Bar Grating Manual
In the US and Canada, grating is specified through the ANSI/NAAMM Metal Bar Grating Manual (MBG series). It provides load tables, recommended specifications, terminology, material guidance and fabrication practice for steel, stainless steel and aluminum grating.
NAAMM works in imperial units. A typical specification describes bearing bars as 1-1/4 in × 3/16 in (roughly 32 × 5 mm) and uses shorthand designations such as 19-W-4 — where the leading number identifies the bearing bar size, W means welded (P = press-locked), and the trailing 4 is the 4-inch cross bar spacing. Materials reference ASTM standards: ASTM A36 structural steel for bearing bars, ASTM A123 for hot-dip galvanizing, and ASTM A240 grades 304/316L for stainless steel.
UK and Europe: BS 4592 and DIN 24537
BS 4592 is the British standard series for industrial flooring and stair treads. BS 4592-0 sets out common design requirements and installation recommendations; BS 4592-1 specifies metal open bar gratings for industrial flooring. For machinery access platforms, BS 4592 is normally read together with BS EN ISO 14122.
DIN 24537 is the German standard for flooring grids and is common in European specifications. European projects also reference EN 10025 structural steel grades (S235JR, S355JR) and EN ISO 1461 for galvanizing.
Steel Grade Equivalents for Global Buyers
The same physical grade has different names in each system. These are the commonly mapped equivalents:
| China | USA | Europe | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Q235B (GB/T 700) | ASTM A36 | S235JR (EN 10025) | General structural carbon steel, the default for grating |
| 304 / 316L | ASTM A240 304/316L | EN 1.4301 / 1.4404 | Stainless steel grades for corrosive and marine use |
Galvanizing Standards: They Are Not All the Same
Hot-dip galvanizing has its own standards, and “galvanized” alone is not a specification:
- ISO 1461 — the international benchmark for hot-dip galvanized coatings.
- GB/T 13912 (China, 2020 edition) — a modified adoption of ISO 1461, with essentially equivalent coating thickness and test requirements.
- ASTM A123 (USA) — zinc coating on fabricated steel products.
- AS/NZS 4680 (Australia / New Zealand) — hot-dip galvanizing below the equator.
- JIS H 8641 (Japan) — based on ISO 1461:2009 with local modifications.
For a global order, specify “hot-dip galvanized to ISO 1461” or “to GB/T 13912 (equivalent to ISO 1461)” — not just “galvanized” — and state the minimum average coating thickness for your environment.

Key Differences Buyers Must Know
- Edition matters. “YB/T 4001.1” without the year is not a complete specification. Write YB/T 4001.1-2019, BS 4592-1:2006, or the NAAMM edition year.
- Units are not interchangeable. Metric designations (32 × 5 mm, 30 mm pitch) and imperial designations (1-1/4 in × 3/16 in, 19-W-4) describe the same products differently. Mixing them is the most common source of quoting errors.
- Load means nothing without span. Load tables in every standard are tied to clear span and support conditions. “500 kg/m²” without a span cannot be checked or certified.
- Cross bars are not bearing bars. The bearing bars carry the load; cross bars stabilize the panel. Confirm your spec is about the right bars.
- Galvanizing must come after fabrication. Cutting, notching and drilling after galvanizing exposes bare steel and voids the coating guarantee — specify HDG after all fabrication.
- No standard is “universal.” A statement like “supply to international standards” is too vague for procurement. State which document governs the product, and which governs the structural calculation and installation.
How to Write a Globally Compliant Steel Grating Specification
Use this checklist when ordering from any country:
- Governing standard and edition (e.g., YB/T 4001.1-2019 or ANSI/NAAMM MBG + edition)
- Bearing bar size, pitch and cross bar pitch (metric or imperial — choose one)
- Overall panel length × width and bearing bar direction
- Design load and clear span / support condition
- Material grade (Q235B / A36 / S235JR / 304 / 316L) with material certificates
- Serrated or plain bearing bars
- Surface treatment and coating thickness (e.g., HDG to ISO 1461, min. 65–85 μm)
- Cut-outs, notches, hemming and fixing details on a numbered drawing
- Inspection and documentation requirements (mill certificates, load test records)
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Chinese standard YB/T 4001.1 accepted internationally? Yes. YB/T 4001.1 is widely used on export projects across the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Africa and Europe. The key is to state the edition and to add project-specific requirements (material grade, load, coating) that the standard does not cover.
What does G325/30/100 mean? G = steel grating; 325 = bearing bar 32 × 5 mm; 30 = bearing bar pitch 30 mm; 100 = cross bar pitch 100 mm. Suffixes such as S indicate serrated bars.
Which standard should I specify for a US project? Use ANSI/NAAMM MBG with ASTM materials (A36 steel, A123 galvanizing). For a UK project, use BS 4592-0/-1 with BS EN ISO 14122 for machinery access.
Is GB/T 13912 the same as ISO 1461? GB/T 13912 (2020 edition) is a modified adoption of ISO 1461:2009. Coating thickness and testing requirements are essentially equivalent for grating purposes.
Can a Chinese factory produce to BS 4592 or NAAMM specs? Yes — most export manufacturers such as Sino Grating produce to YB/T, NAAMM and BS requirements and supply the corresponding certificates. State the governing standard on the inquiry and confirm it in the order.
What is the difference between bearing bar pitch and cross bar pitch? Bearing bar pitch is the spacing between the load-bearing flat bars; cross bar pitch is the spacing of the smaller cross bars along the panel. Both affect load capacity, stiffness and opening size.
Final Advice
The grating standard is the contract between your design and the factory floor. Name the standard with its edition, add load with span, keep metric and imperial units apart, and specify coating thickness in the same document. Done right, you get panels that pass inspection on the first shipment; done wrong, you get rework, freight disputes and site delays.
Send your governing standard and load requirements to Sino Grating — a steel grating manufacturer with more than 20 years of export experience to Europe, the Middle East, Southeast Asia and Africa — and we will confirm the correct welded, press-locked or stainless steel grating specification for your project.
